Prosecutors have recommended that the brothers be resentenced, which could lead to their release from prison. Over 35 years ago, Lyle and Erik Menendez — then 21 and 18 years old — walked into the den of their Beverly Hills mansion and fired more than a dozen shotgun rounds at their parents.

Their project was inspired by the Norwegian approach to incarceration that believes rehabilitation in humane prisons surrounded by nature leads to successful reintegration into society, even for those who have committed terrible crimes.

The Menendez brothers are currently housed at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in Otay Mesa. NBC 7 was there on Thursday afternoon to take a look at life inside for the convicted killers.
